Snowfall, excessive speeds cause dozens of car crashes in Weber, Davis counties

Monday , February 19, 2018 - 3:37 PM

A blanket of snow that fell on Northern Utah Sunday night and Monday morning is credited for a number of car crashes in Weber and Davis counties.

The Utah Highway Patrol responded to 16 car crashes in Weber County between midnight and 11 a.m. Monday, according to UHP spokesperson Trooper Lawrence Hopper.

Hopper said UHP responded to 45 car crashes in Davis County within the same time frame.

Many of these car crashes are due to excessive speed and drivers not slowing down in the current weather conditions, Hopper said.

As of Monday afternoon, there were no road closures on major highways or interstates in Weber and Davis counties, he said. Farther south near Nephi, northbound lanes of Interstate 15 were closed due to snowy road conditions, according to a tweet from the Utah Department of Transportation

UHP is asking all drivers on the road in the next few days to decrease their speeds and to increase their following distance of the car in front of them, Hopper said.

However, accidents can happen.

If your car is drivable after a crash and there are no injuries to report, highway patrol asks drivers to take the nearest exit and drive to a gas station or parking lot then call 911, Hopper said.

Hopper said doing this frees up traffic and prevents against jams and additional crashes. Driving to the nearest exit is also safer for both those in the crash and for the police responding to the crash.

The National Weather Service in Salt Lake City reported that roughly four inches of snow has fallen in Ogden during this storm, and South Ogden has seen around five inches of snowfall.

In Davis County, the NWS reported that Bountiful has seen around nine to 10 inches of snowfall as of Monday afternoon. The Cache Valley has received even more, with the Logan area seeing over a foot of snowfall in some areas. Areas in the Salt Lake Valley are reporting as much as 22 inches of snowfall, according to the NWS
