Weber County dentist charged with allegedly possessing, sharing child porn

OGDEN — A Weber County dentist is accused of possessing and sending child porn to an undercover agent.

Daniel Patrick Alston, 71, was booked Friday in Weber County Jail and charged Monday with 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor, a second-degree felony.

According to a probable cause statement, an agent for the Internet Crimes Against Children task force noticed an internet user who was offering to share files of child porn online.

After receiving the material, the agent found the user’s online address was registered to a home in South Ogden where Alston lived, the document says.

On Feb. 15, the task force searched the home and found at least 10 files containing child porn, according to the charging document.

Alston was questioned by police the same day his home was searched. After he was read his Miranda Rights, Alston admitted to downloading the files due to curiosity and the “forbidden” element of the files, the charging document states.

Alston was planning to retire in the near future and move into a home he owns in Mexico, according to the probable cause statement.

The internet crimes task force asked for a $250,000 bail for Alston. According to Weber County Jail records, Alston is being held in jail on a $100,000 cash-only bail.

The probable cause statement says Alston is a practicing dentist in the area. According to state records, his dental license is active until May 2018.

Alston is listed online as the dentist at the Alston Family Dental Center in Washington Terrace. The dental center does not appear to be an operational business, and was not listed in the business directory for Washington Terrace. A call to a phone number listed on dental center’s website was unanswered as of Tuesday afternoon.

The dental license for Alston is listed as active in state records. State records and the dental center’s website says the practice opened in 1998. It is unclear when the dental center closed.

Alston’s initial court appearance is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 21 in Ogden’s 2nd District Court.
